RealPlayer configuration

Essential configuration settings

RealPlayer menu
If the RealPlayer is in fullscreen mode then you can access the standalone player by pressing the Esc key.

To return to fullscreen theater mode press Ctrl and 3 at the same time.
Tools ... Preferences
The fourth option on the top level menu is marked Tools and at the bottom of its dropdown sub-menu is an option marked Preferences which will provide access to most of the RealPlayer configuration settings.
General ... RealPlayer Options
The General sub-menu provides RealPlayer Options

The screenshot illustrates the recommended settings.
Connection ... Bandwidth
As SMIL applications can provide different content depending on your connection speed it is vital that you select the correct setting. If the bandwidth setting is set too high then the SMIL clips will be interrupted during playback. Should this happen frequently then you reduce the bandwidth to the next lowest setting for more reliable streaming.
Content ... Clip Cache
On the Content sub-menu you will see the option to set the Clip Cache which is accessible via the button marked Settings and which will open in its own popup window.
Temporary clip cache settings
The default clip cache is only set to only 4 megabytes. For SMIL streaming of video content you should increase the capacity of the clip cache to 80 megabytes or greater by moving the slider component.

Optional settings

Playback Settings
PerfectPlay, TurboPlay and LivePause are not required for SMIL streaming and so can be safely unchecked.
Media Types
If the SMIL clips open in another media player instead of RealPlayer you can select the option to manually configure the associated media types. You will need to re-assign the SMIL multimedia presentation type to RealPlayer. If you want a quick and easy alternative to manual configuration then select the option : Make RealPlayer my Universal Media Player
Hardware ... Video Card Compatibility
If there are any problems with the screen display you can set the RealPlayer to use the more reliable display modes.
